the short version.

Everything below says this at length. If the two ever disagree, the long version wins.

  1. A handful of essential cookies keep you and your guests signed in, keep payments safe and remember your choice.
  2. Analytics cookies only arrive if you say yes. Until then, Google Tag Manager runs with every kind of storage turned off.
  3. Nothing for advertising, whatever you choose. Every advertising signal stays denied.
  4. Change your mind at any time from Cookie settings at the foot of every page.

In short A small file a website saves in your browser so it can remember something between pages or visits.

Some cookies are essential: without them you could not stay signed in or pay. Others are optional, like the ones that tell us which pages are read. The law lets us set essential cookies without asking. For anything else we need your yes first, and this page lists both kinds.

Essential cookies

In short The cookies the site cannot work without. They are always on and none of them follows you around the web.

Always onSet without asking, because the service needs them. As at 17 October 2026.

Analytics, only with your yes

In short If you allow analytics, Google Analytics counts which pages are read, so we can make the useful ones better. If you do not, nothing is set.

Only after you choose Allow analyticsIP addresses are anonymised. Google's advertising features are switched off.

We load Google Tag Manager in Consent Mode v2. It starts with all four of Google's consent signals denied, and your choice only ever changes one of them.

In short btd_logged_in is a flag, not a key. It tells this site you are signed in to the app, and nothing else.

The app and this site live on different addresses: app.buildtheday.com and buildtheday.com. When you sign in to the app, it sets btd_logged_in to 1 for every buildtheday.com address, so this site can swap Log in for a link back to your weddings.

1

The only thing it holds. No name, no email, no account number. It cannot sign anyone in, and it is wiped the moment you sign out, or after 7 days.

The banner

In short On your first visit we ask once. Both answers are one tap and carry the same weight.

This is the banner as it appears, in its two states. It sits at the bottom of the page, never covers the whole screen and never blocks you from reading.

First visit Nothing optional is set yet.
Choose Also opens from Cookie settings.

Changing your choice

In short Cookie settings, at the foot of every page, opens the choice again. Your new answer applies straight away.

Your choice on this browser: checking

  • Cookie settings. The link at the foot of every page on buildtheday.com, and the button above, open the Choose panel.
  • Clear your cookies. The banner comes back on your next visit and nothing optional is set until you answer.
  • Your browser. Every browser can block or delete cookies. Blocking the essential ones will stop you signing in.
  • Google's own tool. Google offers a browser add-on that stops Google Analytics on every site, at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Turning analytics off stops new analytics cookies straight away. Visits counted before you changed your mind stay in our reports for up to 14 months, with anonymised IP addresses.

Wedding websites

In short A wedding website sets one cookie, and only if a guest asks to be remembered.

CookieSet byWhat it doesHow long
guest_authThe couple's wedding websiteLets a guest come back without signing in again, when they leave Remember me ticked. Holds the website's address and the guest's passcode or name, and is checked again on our server every time.7 days

Wedding websites load typefaces from Google Fonts and maps from OpenStreetMap. Neither sets cookies, but both see a visitor's IP address when they load. The privacy policy lists them. Links to other sites, such as a gift list or a venue, follow those sites' own cookie rules.

Questions

In short Write to us. We will tell you exactly what is set in your browser and why.

Email [email protected] with the subject Cookies, and our data protection lead will reply within one month. When we add or change a cookie, this page changes first, and if it is optional we ask you again.
