What this covers
In short This site, the app, and the wedding websites made with it.
This statement covers buildtheday.com, the app at app.buildtheday.com and the wedding websites we host, at a buildtheday address or on a couple's own domain. On a wedding website the couple chooses the words, photos, fonts and colours, and we build everything around them. Section 5 has a few ways couples can help.
What we aim for
In short The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.2, level AA. In plain words, this.
- Read it
- Text has enough contrast, resizes to 200% without breaking, and reflows to one column at 320 pixels wide.
- Zoom it
- Pinch zoom always works. We never switch it off.
- Reach it
- Everything works with a keyboard, with a focus ring you can see, and targets big enough to tap.
- Hear it, or not
- Films are captioned and nothing makes a sound until you ask it to.
- Stay still
- If your device asks for less motion, everything stops in its finished state.
- Understand it
- Plain words, buttons that say what they do, errors that say how to fix them.
What we do
In short Contrast is checked by the system, not by eye. Words replace icons. Motion and sound wait for you.
4.5:1
The lowest contrast any text on a couple's website can have, whatever colour they choose. The system adjusts the shade until it passes.
- Colours guests can read
- When a couple picks a colour, we work out the text that sits on it and a deeper shade for text on white, so every pair of text and ground on their website reaches at least 4.5 to 1.
- Our own colours, measured
- Ink on white is 17.5 to 1, body text 10.3 to 1, the smallest labels 4.8 to 1. Gold is never used for text on white.
- Words, not icons
- There are no icons on this site. Every button and link says what it does, so a screen reader reads the same thing you see.
- Captions on every film
- Our films carry captions burned in and as a text track, and they make sense with the sound off.
- Calm when asked
- With reduced motion on, highlights, counts and reveals appear finished. Nothing scrolls for you and nothing changes size as it moves.
- A focus you can see
- Every control shows a cobalt ring when you reach it with a keyboard.
- Three ways in for guests
- Guests can sign in to a wedding website with a code, with their name alone, or with their name and an emailed code, whichever the couple picks.
- Print when it helps
- Seating plans, menus and the order of the day print as clean, large documents.
What is not right yet
In short The things we know about. Each one has a status, and this list changes as we fix them.
| What | Where | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Pinch zoom was switched off. | buildtheday.com before October 2026 | Fixed in the new site |
| Some controls were icons with no words, including the cookie banner. | buildtheday.com before October 2026 | Fixed in the new site |
| Some content waits for scripts before it fades in, so it can stay hidden if they fail. | buildtheday.com | Being fixed |
| Some of the 26 older themes have text and grounds we have not yet checked for contrast. | Wedding websites | Being checked theme by theme |
| Photos guests upload have no text description. | Wedding websites | Not fixed yet |
| The seating designer and letter designer are drag and drop canvases that are hard to use without a mouse or with a screen reader. | The app | Not fixed yet |
| We have not had an independent audit. | Everywhere | Not done yet |
If one of these stops you doing something, tell us and we will help another way, for example by setting up seating for you or sending details as plain text.
Help your guests
In short Five small things on your wedding website that make a big difference to some of your guests.
- Say what your photos show in the words beside them, if they carry information, such as a map or the order of the day.
- Keep script fonts for headings. Set the details people need, like times and addresses, in a plain font.
- Describe getting in. Step-free routes, parking, toilets, and quiet places, in your venue section.
- Ask about access needs with your own RSVP question, beside dietary needs.
- Leave music off at the start. Guests can still press play.
How we check
In short Our own checks so far. An independent audit is the next step.
This statement was prepared on 17 October 2026 from our own assessment. Colour contrast is calculated by the system every time a colour is chosen. From now on, every new page is checked with a keyboard and a screen reader before it ships. We have not yet had an independent audit, and we will update this page when we do.
Tell us about a problem
In short Anything that gets in your way, on any page or any wedding website. A person reads every message.
